Prior to SILS I was a high school and baking school graduate who juggled multiple jobs. Through wide range of possibilities offered by SILS, I was able to develop the essential skills needed in my career-communication, organization, time management, teamwork, logical and analytical thinking, leadership, and problem-solving. Today I work in the Republic of Zambia as Associate Protection Officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), protecting refugees in Africa. My message to SILS is: “Find your dream, but do not keep on dreaming and make the dream an objective and define concrete steps forward.”At SILS, I had transformative encounters that propelled me into a journey of redefining my worldview and sense of self. One was with a classmate who helped me see my differences as a source of strength, rather than a “nail to hammer down” as the proverb goes. A professor, believing it important for my identity, encouraged me to study in my father's home country—which she later made possible through her unwavering support. Such experiences sparked a desire for knowledge and activism, leading to graduate studies at Waseda and Harvard, both times supported by my professor. Now, at a consulting firm, I am developing the skills to drive social impact, aiming to become a powerful source of support for people in Japan and beyond. Looking back on my student life at SILS, I was in a very privileged environment in that I have been able to get access to any information I want and to pursue my own interests. SILS allows you to take a wide variety of courses in all areas of study. Even if you're not sure ‘what I would like to do', you can find an academic discipline that suits your interests. Now, I am working for a publishing company and keeping in mind that what kind of people, goods and things are getting attention. This way of thinking is truly derived from what I have learned at SILS; finding interests from diverse fields. I would like you to experience this intellectually stimulating culture at SILS!I didn't know what I wanted to do in the future, but SILS is the perfect place for someone like me. I took a variety of classes and participated in the intern program as a reporter while studying abroad, which helped me find what I really wanted to do; journalism. Student life at SILS was also very stimulating. By meeting friends from diverse backgrounds, I came to accept different values and ways of thinking, and to see the world beyond my own imagination. As an announcer, I try to interview people and make them want to talk to me, which helps me draw out what they really think. I believe that the core of this is derived from what I have learned at SILS.
