4th Year6th - 8th Semester3rd Year4th & 5th Semester2nd Year▶︎Check16▶︎Students take Introductory Courses in English, along with learning another language. Intermediate Courses such as the culture and history of a certain country are taken in either only the second language, or in both English and the second language. The APM program (Area Studies and Plurilingual/Multicultural Education Program) focuses on French, Spanish, Chinese and Korean. In addition to studying the languages as a matter of course, the program uses them to develop the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) method, which brings together the content and the language for instruction, where students learn about topics pertaining to those countries―such as culture, history, the economy, and politics―from multiple perspectives.Even if students do not study abroad in the country of the language they chose, they may take some or all of the APM courses. It is also possible to take courses in more than one language (e.g., a student who has taken an introductory APM course in French may take an intermediate APM course in Chinese). In SILS, plurilingual-multicultural education is part of what students seek, receive, and draw from for finding success in their personal and professional lives, both in Japan and abroad. Understanding the world, helping others to understand Japan, getting a proper grasp of social and cultural differences across communities and how these differences can impact all the other fields covered in our curriculum, from economy to politics, education, and art, is what plurilingual-multicultural education is about. To fully acknowledge the diversity of the world, Japanese and global English are no longer enough: all languages are pathways to a sharper vision of what different communities are, think, and aspire to. As part of the MEXT Top Global University project, the APM program strengthens our students' skills through the CLIL approach in Chinese, French, Korean, and Spanish, and prepares them for academic and professional expertise in these languages.Students study overseas for one year. They can further develop their language skills by taking the same courses as local students at their oversea destination.Students can continue taking Intermediate or Advanced courses in their second language after returning to deepen their understanding of the country and improve their second language skills.1st - 3rd SemesterFrom FacultyBeyond Global English: understanding the world in its own wordsProfessorDETEY, Sylvain Matthieu JulienFrom StudentStarting from zero and succeeding in my study abroad destinationKAWASAKI, JiroAdmitted in April 2021/Graduate of Yamagata East Senior High School I started learning Spanish when I entered college and went to study abroad at the University of Barcelona in Spain during the fall semester of my sophomore year. The APM classes are welcome to students of all language levels, and you can experience discussions and role-plays in which everyone can participate. There are also many fascinating courses with quizzes and workshops that make learning fun and engaging. Classes are small, and the environment allows students to actively challenge themselves even if they are not confident in their language skills. In addition to improving my language skills, I was also able to learn about Spanish and South American culture and customs, giving me the basic knowledge I needed for my study abroad destination.Course Plan1st YearAPM ProgramLearning about Multiple Cultures in Many Languages
