Regional and urban policy-making takes place everywhere, in the public and private sectors, at the local and international levels. The Urban School’s programs, which give high priority to gaining practical experience, prepare students and professionals for urban governance in all its forms. The school faculty brings together top scholars and practitioners from the urban planning and policy field.I chose UCLA in Los Angeles, US, as my study abroad destination since I wanted to immerse myself in an environment where international students and immigrants from all over the world gather and diverse cultures are accepted. While staying there, I took classes related to the history of diversity, such as gender and race, and gained new knowledge through discussions with students from various backgrounds. In addition to my studies, I was also a member of five student organizations. In particular, my volunteer activities took me behind the glamorous world of Hollywood to clean up and provide material support in one of Los Angeles' most prominent slums. There, I was able to experience firsthand the front lines of social inequality that cannot be seen on campus. In a cross-cultural exchange club, I served hand-rolled sushi and origami to 40 people and tried to have opportunities not only to absorb other cultures but also to introduce my own culture. Through these experiences, I am convinced that my four-year student life has become more intense as I have learned once again that the challenge of continually facing new goals leads to the broadening of one's own sense of values. In the Double Degree Program, students who study abroad for one or two years at a prestigious overseas university and meet the prescribed requirements will be able to earn degrees both at SILS and at their study abroad destinations. Freiburg is known as an environmentally friendly city, and I had been interested in their study program since I got into Waseda. I took seminars and a project-based course on environmental science where I learned different impacts of climate change and approaches of climate mitigation, and I became more aware of climate action. Moreover, I feel more responsible for my own behavior in regard to environmental impact, as I got along with peer students and other internationals who choose vegan diet or transportation with less carbon footprint on a daily basis from the perspective of environmental protection. These real experiences throughout the exchange program influenced my everyday behaviors a lot, which I think would not have happened without the year abroad. After the year in Germany, I belong to the seminar class on urban study where we learn sustainable urban planning, and my interest has expanded to designing of infrastructure for environmentally friendly means of transportation.Experience in my year abroad has made me more conscious of carbon footprint by our lives, and therefore I would like to keep learning how to develop a sustainable society. I hope your time abroad brings new interests and opportunities in your future career.South Korea Korea University (1.5year program)Taiwan National Taiwan University (1.5year program) Thailand Chulalongkorn University (2year program) U.S. Earlham College (2year program)IKOMA, Sorami Admitted in April 2020 Graduate of Nara Senior High School (Japan) Host Institution: University College FreiburgChallenges and growth for the most fulfilled international student in Japan @ UCLAI learned about thingsin-depth through real-lifeexperiencesFROM STUDENTFROM STUDENTDouble Degree Programs(DD)Dual Degree Program(5BM Programme)
