4YearsatSILSFROM STUDENT15From the first to the third semester, students select an area of interest from a variety of liberal studies courses and discover their own research themes. The program is characterized by a thorough language education and an educational system which respects students’ independence. All new students take a placement test, and are then separated into language classes by level based on their results.SP1:EnglishSP2:English and JapaneseRegarding the SP (Study Plan), refer to the bottom of p.22.■ First Year Seminar ■ English Language Courses ■ Introductory Statistics ■ Introductory Courses ■ Other Foreign LanguagesTSUBAKI, LeonAdmitted in September 2021Graduate of Adlai E. Stevenson High School (U.S.)Diverse school environments in terms of students and courses provided are the reasons why I chose SILS. Having discussions in classes with peers, I discover new perspectives on different topics every day. By recognizing new perspectives provided by peers, I believe understanding of the topic became much deeper. Not to mention, a diverse environment is another strength of SILS. Students have opportunities to meet with people from different backgrounds and cultures in class and outside of class. It helps students to learn and appreciate diversity which I believe is essential to living in a world experiencing globalization. Regarding courses provided, since SILS provides liberal arts education, students can freely choose various courses. One of my favorite things about liberal arts education is how I can discover what I like about it by taking courses that are unfamiliar to me. For example, as a student taking French as my second foreign language, APM Program courses have helped me learn the language and about French-speaking countries themselves. Lastly, I would like to note that the SILS Curriculum helps you discover what you are passionate about and deepen your knowledge about it, and the study abroad program helps you to be a strong, independent, and knowledgeable person. ■ Intermediate Seminar ■ Intermediate CoursesI situated myself in a highly diverse environment, and deepened my knowledgeIf you are interested in studying outside of Japan, you will have the opportunity to select study abroad programs from many partner institutions that are well aligned with your educational goals along with preparing for language proficiency tests such as TOEFL, which are required by study abroad destinations. Faculty members and staff members will provide various forms of assistance for students when choosing a university. SP1: One-year study abroad is mandatory. SP2: Study abroad is optional.Study abroad destinations will be determined in light of students’ language abilities and their grades at university, as well as other standards set by host universities.*Standard Model PlanSILS builds on the roots of liberal arts education, and over the program of four years, the school curriculum will equip students with a pluralistic and international perspective, the ability to think logically, and excellent language skills, while they cultivate knowledge in a wide range of subjects. In addition, students whose first language is Japanese are required to study abroad, and SILS also provides substantial support for job-hunting.Acquiring of language skills and selecting research topics【1st Semester】Placement Tests【2nd Semester】【3rd Semester】Preparation for Study AbroadAcceptance from Host Universityst yearnd year12
