French Spanish Chinese 12I had studied French as a second foreign language since entering high school and continued to take it as a second foreign language at SILS. In my sophomore year, I was scheduled to study abroad at Science-po Lyon, France, to study international relations and European politics in a more practical way, however, it was cancelled due to the Corona disaster. In the meantime, the APM class allowed me to experience studying abroad in France in a pseudo-study abroad experience. I was able to take classes on populism, French politics, French-Japanese political comparisons, and international relations. Classes were small and included lectures, discussions, and role-plays. I was sometimes worried about whether I would be able to keep up with the level of my French when I first started the course, but I was able to attend the classes with peace of mind because the classes were planned to proceed smoothly according to each student’s level. I think APM courses are very attractive courses that can be taken not only to maintain language skills after studying abroad, but also to prepare for study abroad. The APM program (Area Studies and Plurilingual / Multicultural Education Program) focuses on French, Spanish, Chinese and Korean. In addition to studying the languages as a matter of course, the program uses them to develop the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) method, which brings together the content and the language for instruction, where students learn about topics pertaining to those countries―such as culture, history, the economy, and politics―from multiple perspectives.Even if students do not study abroad in the country of the language they chose, they may take some or all of the APM courses. It is also possible to take courses in more than one language (e.g., a student who has taken an introductory APM course in French may take an intermediate APM course in Chinese).APM- Introduction to French StudiesAPM- Understanding French CultureAPM- Understanding French PoliticsAPM- Populism in France and Japan APM- Populism and the Crisis of Democracy: a Comparative Perspective APM- Political Science: a French Perspective Beyond Global English: understanding the world in its own wordsIn SILS, plurilingual-multicultural education is part of what students seek, receive, and draw from for finding success in their personal and professional lives, both in Japan and abroad. Understanding the world, helping others to understand Japan, getting a proper grasp of social and cultural differences across communities and how these differences can impact all the other fields covered in our curriculum, from economy to politics, education, and art, is what plurilingual-multicultural education is about. To fully acknowledge the diversity of the world, Japanese and global English are no longer enough: all languages are pathways to a sharper vision of what different communities are, think, and aspire to. As part of the MEXT Top Global University project, the APM program strengthens our students’ skills through the CLIL approach in Chinese, French, Korean, and Spanish, and prepares them for academic and professional expertise in these languages.APM- Introduction to Spain and Latin America: History, Society and Culture APM- Spanish Language through Area Studies: Spanish myths and stereotypes (Spanish CLIL-preparation for study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country) Study Abroad APM- Hispanic Travelers in Japan: cultural and literary intersections between the Hispanic World and Japan APM- Hispanism in Japan APM- Japonism in Spain and Latin America: The Inspiration of Japan APM- Introduction to Area Study Methods APM- Sociological Study on Local Government in Contemporary China APM- Sociological Study on Local Government in Contemporary China APM- Korea and Post-colonialism in APM- The Analects of Confucius: a APM- Building Nation States in Two Koreas after Colonialism (In English Seminar of Close Reading APM- Realist Literature in KoreaAPM- A Critical Understanding of Korean Society through the Lens of SexualityAPM- Understanding the Korean Democracy Movementthe Cold War System and Korean)Sample Course ListIntroductory Lecture CourseProfessorDETEY, Sylvain Matthieu Julien(in English) Intermediate Lecture Course(in English) Intermediate Lecture Course (in English and L3*) Intermediate Lecture Course(in English and L3*) Intermediate Lecture Course(in L3*) Advanced Lecture Course(in English) Advanced Lecture Course (in English and L3*) Advanced Lecture Course(in L3*) KUMI, PriscillaAdmitted in April 2019Graduate of Yokohama Senior High School of International Studies (Japan)Learn Broadly and DeeplyAs of AY2022 *L3:French, Spanish, Chinese, Korean#APM ProgramKorean FROM FACULTYFROM STUDENTStudents are able to acquire language skills at an academic level while deepening their professional knowledgeLearning about Multiple Cultures in Many Languages#APM ProgramWhy SILS?
