About 40% of foreign students at Waseda attend language classes at CJL. Foreign students at CJL include full-time students at undergraduate and graduate schools, international exchange students and JLP students mainly attending CJL. A distinctive feature of CJL is that students can tailor Japanese classes to their individual needs, choosing from over 600 classes each week to create their own programs. What would you like to use the Japanese language for? The first step in Japanese-language communication is to become a member of the Japanese-language community. Come study at CJL and accomplish what you want to do in Japanese. Makiko IkegamiDirector, Center for Japanese Language (CJL)The Center for Japanese Language (CJL) is an internal organization that has central responsibility for all Japanese-language instruction at Waseda University. The predecessor of CJL was launched as a school of Japanese language education in 1988, after becoming independent from the Institute of Language Teaching. The year 2023 marks the 35th anniversary of CJL’s foundation. CJL’s programs meet the needs of students from approximately 80 countries and regions, with classes that serve the widely varying objectives and motivations of Japanese-language learners. Permanent programs at CJL include the Japanese Language Program (JLP) and the Short-term Japanese Program. Students can attend JLP for half a year (one semester) or a full year (two semesters), with classes offered for 14 weeks each in the spring and fall semesters.
