27Dean, Kazuhiko TESHIGAHARAGraduate School of LawFrom its establishment in 1951 to the present, the Graduate School of Law, Waseda University has welcomed a wide variety of students who aspire to become legal scholars, or legal practitioners looking for a way to rediscover the depths of the academic studies through a master’s degree program, or those who plan to take the national civil service examination or the old bar examination, or those who come to study from other countries especially East Asia where Waseda has a strong presence.The fact that many graduates of our school have been active in education, research, legal practice, international relations, public administration, and other fields, and have been highly regarded by society, is a proof to the reputation of our educational and research system.Since the establishment of the Waseda Law School in 2004, students taking the bar exam have been affiliated with the Law School, but from 2025, “the Waseda Law School” as an independent graduate school will be integrated as one of our programs, Juris Doctor Program of the Graduate School of Law. The operation of the Juris Doctor Program will be directly managed by the faculty led by the Dean of the same Law School, and the Graduate School of Law is now organizationally responsible for the training of both researchers and legal professionals. (*For details of the “Juris Doctor Program,” please refer to the “Law School” pamphlet.) In the series of Waseda Faculty of Law, which consists of the undergraduate school and the graduate school, the training of legal professionals, in addition to the training of researchers, has returned to our department, the Graduate School of Law. The training of “researchers” from the route of “training of legal professionals” has also become one of the objectives of our school.The Graduate School of Law is the largest graduate school in Japan in terms of the number of students enrolled, the number of faculty members, and the number of courses offered.
