■優れた人材を輩出してきた歴史■日本初のジャーナリズム大学院　早稲田大学は、2005年に開始した「科学技術ジャーナリスト養成プログラム」を経て、2008 年4月に「修士（ジャーナリズム）」の学位を授与する日本初のジャーナリズム大学院として、「ジャーナリズムコース」を政治学研究科に設置しました。また、2013年4月には経済学の専門知と分析力の修得を重視した「経済ジャーナリズムコース」を経済学研究科に設置しました。2016年９月入学の募集を最後に、教育効果の向上および効率化のため経済ジャーナリズムコースをジャーナリズムコースへ統合しますが、経済を専門とするジャーナリストの育成の系譜は、今後も引き継がれていきます。本学ではジャーナリズムコースの通称を「ジャーナリズム大学院（ジャーナリズム・スクール、J-school）」とし、政治経済学術院はもとより、早稲田大学内の多様な研究者の協力を得ながら、教育・研究活動を推し進めています。■専門ジャーナリストの育成は早稲田の使命　公共の利益に貢献する優れたジャーナリストを育成することは、時代を超えた早稲田大学の使命であり、責務です。　グローバル化の波、そしてインターネットの登場によるメディア構造そのものの変化。混迷する現代社会が必要としているのは、実践的であるとともに、専門性においても卓越したジャーナリストです。こうした人材には、政治や経済、国際関係から社会、文化、科学技術まで、現代社会がかかえる諸問題を、専門知と公共圏の最先端の接点で捉えられる鋭敏さが求められています。ジャーナリズム大学院は、各専門分野の研究者と現役ジャーナリストが密接に連携しながら、高度専門職業人としてのジャーナリスト養成をめざします。そこには、アカデミズムとジャーナリズムが出会い、対話をする場が生まれます。　新たな大学院という場の創造を通して、早稲田大学は新たなジャーナリズムの形成と専門ジャーナリストの育成に寄与し、グローバルな公共圏の開拓に貢献します。石橋湛山橋湛山記念早稲田ジャーナリズム大賞が制定されました。　石橋湛山のような人物を輩出し、世間では「早稲田といえばジャーナリズム」といわれることが多いのですが、不思議なことに、高度専門職業人としてのジャーナリストを育成するジャーナリズム大学院はありませんでした。　1882年（明治15年）に創設された早稲田大学は、戦前、戦後を通じて、多数の優れた人材を言論、ジャーナリズムの世界に送り出してきました。その一人がエコノミスト、ジャーナリスト、政治家として活躍した石橋湛山（1884～1973）です。反戦反軍思想、小日本主義思想などを論じ、「野に石橋あり」との評価を得たと言います。彼の精神を継承するため、2000年には石6Overview of theWaseda Journalism SchoolThe first Graduate School of Journalism in JapanIn 2005, Waseda University started the Program to Nurture Science and Technology Journalists, which was then developed into the Journalism Course (established in April 2008) in the Graduate School of Political Science. It is the first graduate school of journalism in Japan and grants a M.A. in journalism. Furthermore, in April 2013, the Economic Journalism Course was established in the Graduate School of Economics. This course places emphasis on specialized knowledge and analytical capabilities with regard to economics. For applications accepted for enrollment from September 2016, the Economic Journalism Course will be integrated into the Journalism Course with the aim of raising its educational effect and efficiency. However, the tradition of cultivating journalists specializing in the economic field will continue. The Journalism Course at Waseda University is commonly referred to as the Journalism Graduate School (Journalism School, J-school), and the Faculty of Political Science and Economics has from its early beginnings pursued education and research while receiving the cooperation of a wide range of researchers at Waseda University.Raising specialized journalists is the mission of Waseda UniversityRaising excellent journalists who are able to contribute to the benefit of the public has been the mission and the responsibility of Waseda University at all times. Due to the wave of globalization and the appearance of the Internet, the structure of the media has changed. Today’s chaotic times need journalists who are practical and have excellent specialized expertise. They need to be capable of thinking sharply, to grasp various issues of contemporary society, extending from politics, economics, international affairs, society and culture up to science and technology, at the most advanced point of contact of specialized knowledge and the public sphere. The Graduate School of Journalism aims to raise journalists as highly skilled professionals through close collaboration between researchers in various fields of specialization and active journalists. The school offers a place where academism and journalism meet to engage in dialogue. Through the creation of a new graduate school, Waseda University will contribute to forming a new journalism and raising specialized journalists, and to developing a global public sphere.A history of producing excellent talentsFounded in 1882, Waseda University has produced many excellent talents in the world of the press and journalism throughout the prewar and postwar periods. One of these distinguished figures was Tanzan Ishibashi (1884–1973) who worked as an economist, a journalist and a politician. He stood up for anti-war and anti-militarist ideas and the Small Japan Policy, through which he gained a reputation as “a great man in non-government.” In order to pass down the spirit of Tanzan Ishibashi, Waseda University established the Waseda Journalism Award in Memory of Tanzan Ishibashi in 2000. People in the public often say that “Waseda is known for journalism,” as Waseda University has produced many talented people including Tanzan Ishibashi. However, a curious fact was that Waseda University had not established a graduate school of journalism to raise highly skilled journalists as professionals.ジャーナリズム大学院　概要
