ジャーナリズム大学院 プログラム・マネージャー瀬川 至朗Being a journalist is certainly not a stylish job.Sometimes journalists have to be tactical in communicating with the people they interview, and sometimes they work themselves to the bone covering a story.Then why do people want to become journalists?I think it is because of the real joy of being a close witness to changes in society and humanity’s historical events, and of widely sharing their records with other people. Become a witness to the times, write about it, and tell the story vividly: isn’t it curiosity about humans, our mysterious existence, which leads journalists to the scene of events? David Halberstam, who covered the Vietnam War as a reporter for The New York Times and won the Pulitzer Prize, said the following:“My main interest is in expressing what kind of times we are living in, who we are, how and where the untruths of the day are created, why wars happen, and why and how war has to continue. It is writing the drama of our times while verifying them as a journalist. At the same time, it is writing the irony and crisis of the times. This is why I am a journalist, a historian and a playwright simultaneously.” (From an interview published in America Journalism Houkoku, written by Takashi Tachibana and published by Bunshunbunko.)Superior journalists have to have the perspective of a historian and the expressiveness of a playwright. At the same time, they also need to be able to unravel the big picture of our complex, globalized times, and to have the thought and expertise to see the future. Having high aspirations is more important than anything, and journalists require professional abilities. Professional journalists are people who have both the expertise to unravel events and practical skills (in coverage and expressiveness), as well as people who are strongly aware of the public nature of their mission. Also, they are strong individuals not bound to an organization, who can be active in every direction with a free spirit.The Journalism School, where academia and journalism can mix at a deeper level, is the best place to develop such highly skilled professionals.We look forward to meeting willing students.MessageShiro Segawa Waseda Journalism School Program Manager　ジャーナリストは決してカッコイイ職業ではありません。　取材相手と駆け引きをすることもあれば、体を酷使して地を這うような取材をすることもあります。　なぜ、人はジャーナリストをめざすのでしょうか。　社会の変化や人類の歴史的出来事をもっとも身近で目撃し、そして、その記録を人々に広く伝えていく醍醐味、だと思います。時代の目撃者となり、生き生きと書き、語る。ジャーナリストをそうした現場に導くのは、人間という摩訶不思議な存在に対する好奇心ではないでしょうか。　ニューヨーク・タイムズの記者としてベトナム戦争を取材し、ピューリッツア賞を受賞したデイヴィッド・ハルバースタムはこう述べています。　「私の主たる関心は、我々の時代はいかなる時代であり、我々は何者であり、時代の虚偽はどこからいかにして生まれ、戦争がなぜ起き、なぜ、いかに続かねばならなかったかを示すところにある。ジャーナリストとして同時代を検証しながら、我々の時代のドラマを書くことにある。それは同時に時代のアイロニー、時代のクライシスを書くことでもある。私が同時にジャーナリストであり、歴史家であり、劇作家であるというのはこういう意味なのです」（立花隆著『アメリカジャーナリズム報告』＝文春文庫＝所収）　優れたジャーナリストは、歴史家の視点と劇作家に匹敵する表現力を持たなければいけません。と同時に、複雑化しグローバル化する時代の大局を読み解き、先行きを見通せる思想と専門性を持たなければなりません。志を高く持つことは何よりもたいせつです。ジャーナリストにはプロフェショナルな能力が求められます。　プロフェッショナルなジャーナリストとは、事象を読み解く専門的な知識と実践的なスキル（取材・表現力）の両者をそなえつつ、その使命の公共性を強く認識した人物のことです。個として強いジャーナリストであり、組織を意識することなく、自由闊達な精神で縦横に活躍できるジャーナリストです。　アカデミズムとジャーナリズムが深いレベルで融合できるジャーナリズム大学院は、まさに、こうした高度専門職業人の育成にふさわしい場であるといえます。　熱意ある学生との出会いを楽しみにしています。5プログラム・マネージャーからのメッセージ
