The world of global politics and economics demands cutting-edge research and problem-solving ability and a wide range of knowledge and skills. People who possess the practical and specialized knowledge of a higher degree are in more demand than ever.Many international organizations—the United Nations and many of its specialized agencies, for example—require their employees to have at least a Master’s degree. In Europe and the United States, to complete the highest degree is among the factors that determine his or her future salary and career potential, even in the private sector. In comparison, there are fewer career opportunities in Japan for those with a Doctoral degree. Nonetheless, those who hold a higher degree are increasingly expected to perform in a wide range of fields including corporations, government agencies, and academic institutions not only as researchers but also as journalists/communicators.
