NOZAKI, NatsukoM.A in Journalism, Graduate School of Political Science(Completed in March 2017)ジャーナリズムコースを志願した理由印象に残っている授業現在の仕事についてClasses that Left an ImpressionFor my master's work, I wrote a piece of reportage on “Ground Pollution in Returned Land Formerly for Military Use in Okinawa.” The “Master Project” class in which I enrolled seemed almost like a luxurious experience to me: I received generous guidance from three journalist-instructors who were active at the front-lines of reporting: Professor Segawa, who taught me everything there is to know about investigative reporting and a logical approach to journalism; Professor Nonaka, who provided the guidance I needed to scope out the essence of the theme of my master’s project; and Mr. Shinobu Yoshioka, who painstakingly demonstrated to me how to write with style and to express my ideas clearly. Every week, the instructors noted numerous points in my work that required improvement, and I was even at a loss as to what to do at times, but it was nonetheless an extremely valuable experience that allowed me to improve bit by bit. I was taught once more the importance of patiently continuing to investigate to the very end and to carefully craft each sentence to complete a single piece.My Current JobAfter graduating, I returned to Okinawa, and I am once again working as a reporter. I continue to write articles and to produce documentaries to convey to as large an audience as possible the various issues, past and present, that involve my home prefecture, including the Battle of Okinawa and the problems associated with US military bases. I believe that taking a good look at Okinawa will make people think about what kind of country Japan is and where it is heading. Until taking the journalism course, I had been writing articles my own way; I would be very pleased to learn if I am now considering my audience or readership more deeply and conveying my reporting to them in ways that are easier to understand and more logical.Why I Chose to Apply to the Journalism CourseI entered graduate school during a one-year break from my job, through which I had attained 20 years’ experience as a reporter working for broadcasters in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Okinawa. As a reporter, I started on the police beat and then moved on to cover prefectural politics and to sit at the news desk. During that time, I also produced 15 documentaries and won major awards. However, after working so hard during my 20s and 30s, and with my 40s fast approaching, I faced a dilemma brought on by self-doubts that my perspective had become rigid and my works had become by-the-numbers. I wanted to break out of my shell and to improve the technical and expressive abilities required for investigative reporting, and thus I made the decision to return to school.21山口と沖縄の放送局で記者を20年間経験した節目に、仕事を1年休職し、大学院に入学しました。報道現場では、警察担当に始まり、県政担当や、デスク業務を経験したほか、15本ほどドキュメンタリーを制作し、大きな賞もいただきました。しかし必死に仕事を覚えた20代、30代を経て、40代に差し掛かった頃、自分の視点が凝り固まってしまっているのではないか、作品がパターン化してしまっているのではないかというジレンマを抱えました。自分の殻を破り、調査報道に必要な技術や表現力を磨きたいと考え、もう一度学ぶ決意をしました。修士作品として、「沖縄の返還軍用地の土壌汚染」をテーマにルポルタージュを書きました。そのために受講した「マスタープロジェクト」は、第一線で活躍する3人のジャーナリストの先生たちから手厚い指導を受けられる贅沢な時間でした。調査報道や論理的アプローチを徹底的に指導してくださった瀬川先生、テーマの本質を見極めるよう助言してくださった野中先生、ルポ全体の流れを始め、文章のスタイルや、表現まで細かく丁寧に見てくださった吉岡先生。毎週たくさんの修正点を指摘され、途方に暮れたこともありましたが、どこまで頑張れるのか、自分を鍛えられる大変貴重な経験でした。一つの作品を完成させるために、最後の最後まで根気強く調査を続け、言葉を丁寧に紡いでいくことの大切さを改めて教わりました。卒業後は、沖縄に帰り、再び記者の仕事をしています。これからも沖縄戦や基地問題を始め、ふるさとが抱える様々なテーマをより多くの人たちに伝えるために、記事を書いたり、ドキュメンタリーを制作したりします。沖縄を見つめることは、日本がどんな国か、どこに向かっているのかを考えることになると思います。これまでは自己流で記事を書いてきましたが、もっと視聴者や読者のことを考え、わかりやすく、論理的に伝えることができればと考えています。修了生の声Messages from Alumni野崎 夏子政治学研究科ジャーナリズムコース(2017年3月修了)
