　当研究科に限らず、大学院への進学を検討されている方の中には、将来は研究職への従事を希望する方がいらっしゃることでしょう。独立行政法人科学技術振興機構（Japan Science and Technology Agency: JST）が提供する「研究者人材データベース」（https://jrecin.jst.go.jp/seek/SeekTop）において公募されている求人情報を見ると、常勤研究職の採用条件として「博士学位を有する者またはそれと同等以上の学識を有する者」としている研究機関が数多くあります。現在、それだけ研究職のキャリアにおいて、博士後期課程における研究の研鑽、研究業績の蓄積が重要視されていることの証左ではないでしょうか。　当研究科の政治学コースの修士課程を修了した後には、博士後期課程への進学の道が開かれています。修士課程から博士後期課程へと推薦入試を利用して進学する場合、修士課程において実施される「分析手法認定試験」に合格することが第一条件となります。この「分析手法認定試験」は、政治学コースに設置されている「政治学研究方法」に関する科目のうち、数理分析・規範・経験のいずれか1科目の方法論の習得度を測る試験となります。博士後期課程への推薦入学を希望する学生は、修士課程在学中にこの試験に合格する必要があります。　第二の関門として、修士論文の提出後に行われる修士論文口頭試問において、博士後期課程への進学に向けた口述試験が合わせて実施されます。修士論文と合わせて、（1）語学能力に関する証明書（TOEIC、TOEFLなど）、（2）博士後期課程における研究計画書、（3）博士論文の章立て、（4）先行業績についての批判的分析を提出し、口述試験においてはこれらに関する質疑応答を行い、博士後期課程への進学の可否が判定されます。　国際社会では高等教育への関心が高まっています。ビジネスや国際政治・経済の舞台では、最先端の研究や問題解決のため、知識や技術を総括的に持っている人材、実践的専門知識を備えた学位取得者が、一層求められるようになってきています。　例えば、国際連合及びその専門機関をはじめとする多数の国際機関では、修士号以上の学位が求められています。欧米では民間企業でも取得学位が将来の年収や昇進に影響しています。　欧米に比べると、日本では博士学位取得者のキャリアパスは十分に用意されているとは言い難い状況です。しかし、今後日本がグローバル化した社会で競争力を維持していくためには、高度な専門性や研究能力等を有する学位取得者が、研究者としてのみでなく、企業や行政、教育機関などの社会の多様な場で活躍・活用されることが今まで以上に期待されています。Our graduate school is not alone among graduate schools in having students who have enrolled in its programs in the hope of launching a career in research. As the employment opportunities listed in the Japan Research Career Information Network (https://jrecin.jst.go.jp/seek/SeekTop) hosted by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) show, a great number of research organizations require a Doctoral degree or, at minimum, equivalent scholarly attainment as a qualification for a permanent research position. It is proof of the value of diligent research and building a record of academic research achievement for a career in research. Students who complete a Master’s Degree in the Political Science Course of the Graduate School can apply directly for the Doctoral Program. For those who want to enter the Doctoral Program from the Master’s Program using the primary condition for advancement is passing the Analytical Methods Certification Examination. The Analytical Methods Certification Examination evaluates a candidate’s level of mastery in one of the political science research methodologies—formal models, normative or empirical analysis—which are part of the Political Science Course curriculum. Students who want to advance to the Doctoral Program through Special Admission must pass the examination while they are in the Master’s Program.An oral examination is the second condition for advancing to the Doctoral Program, which is conducted at the same time as the oral examination on the Master’s thesis that takes place after the Master’s thesis has been submitted. Besides the Master’s thesis, the student is required to submit (1) a certificate of English proficiency (TOEIC, TOFEL, etc.), (2) a research plan for the Doctoral Program, (3) chapter titles of a prospective Doctoral dissertation, and (4) a critical analysis of previous work, which is the basis of a question-and-answer session conducted during the oral examination to determine whether the student is qualified to advance to the Doctoral Program.the Interest in higher education continues to grow in today’s global society. The world of global politics and economics demands cutting-edge research and problem-solving ability and a wide range of knowledge and skills. People who possess the practical and specialized knowledge of a higher degree are in more demand than ever.Many international organizations—the United Nations and many of its specialized agencies, for example—want their employees to have at least a Master’s degree. In the West, the highest degree an employee has completed is among the factors that determine his or her future salary and career potential, even in the private sector. Compared to the West, there are fewer career opportunities in Japan for those with a Doctoral degree.
