博士後期課程に進学した理由　研究者への志望は漠然ともっていましたが、関心が途上国における政治にあり、その実態を肌で感じたいと考えていました。アメリカ留学により修士課程を終えたのち、国際協力や国連機関の仕事に携わりましたが、やはり研究の場に戻りたいと考えて進学しました。研究者としては多少回り道だったかもしれませんが、結果としてそれまでの経験から得た知見が博士論文におけるテーマの着想源、そして執筆の原動力となりました。博士後期課程での研究テーマは何ですか？　競争的で自由な選挙の導入、国家の能力の構築、そして暴力の関係が主な研究テーマです。特に、紛争が一旦終わった国で、民主化と国家建設が試みられるとなぜ暴力が起こってしまうかの要因を突き止めようとしています。これまでは、主に東ティモールにおける暴力発生のメカニズムを、計量分析による実証的な分析と、数理モデルの構築による演繹的な分析を踏まえて論じました。今後は、様々なケースの分析を増やしていき、暴力の要因に対してどのような対策を講じれば平和をもたらすことが可能かを検討したいです。研究を進めるにあたって早稲田の魅力はどこにあると思いますか？　政治学研究科の魅力は第一に、政治学の様々な関心、サブフィールド、分析手法を専門とする先生や同期、仲間がおり、お互いに学びあえることです。例えば私は、数理分析の手法を博士課程に入ってから本格的に学びましたが、これまで専門外であった分野について相談や議論ができたことは心強く感じられました。第二に、政治学研究科では、領域修了試験、論文構想試験、博士学位申請論文提出前発表会、最終口頭試問を経て学位を取得することとなっており、博士論文が完成するまでの過程が制度化されています。そのため、博士論文の完成までには一定の時間を要しますが、指導教員と相談しながら、計画的に作成を進めることができると考えます。また、各図書館が所有する文献やデータベースが充実しており、研究が円滑に進んだと感じています。博士後期課程での研究を進める上で経済的なサポート体制はありましたか？　在学中の前半は、大学内の奨学金や研究費、日本学術振興会の特別研究員（DC2）に応募し、採用されたので、フィールドワークの旅費や生活費に充てることができました。また、後半は本学部の助手に採用されたので、論文執筆に注力することができました。その間、学部の必修科目である「政治分析入門」のTAを担当し、本講義の理解促進をはかるために設置された小クラスを運営する機会を得ました。この教務の経験を積んだことは、キャリアアップに繋がったと思います。現在は、都内の大学で助教として勤務しています。23The career path I drew and followedDespite having a vague desire to become a researcher, my interest was in the politics of developing countries, and I wanted to feel these conditions for myself. After finishing my master’s degree by studying in the United States, I held jobs in international cooperation and agencies of the United Nations, but I realized that my true place was in research and entered the doctorate program. This may have been a bit detour as a researcher, but as a result the knowledge I gained from my experience thus far became the source of inspiration for my doctoral dissertation, and the driving force behind my writing.My research themeMy primary research themes are the introduction of competitive and free elections, development of the capability of the state, and their relationship with violence. In particular, I am trying to find the factors behind why violence occurs in countries where conflict has temporarily ended and people are attempting democratization and state building. Thus far, I have discussed the mechanisms that caused violence to occur in East Timor based on empirical analysis by means of quantitative analysis and a priori analysis based on the construction of formal models. In the future, I intend to analyze more cases to examine what measures can be taken against factors behind violence in order to bring peace.The appeal of WasedaThe appeal of the Graduate School of Political Science is first and foremost the presence of professors, classmates, and friends who are specialized in various interests, subfields, and analysis methods of political science, and the ability to learn from each other. For example, I started studying formal model methods in earnest after entering the doctoral course, but it was very encouraging to be able to consult and discuss fields outside of my expertise with such people. Secondly, in the Graduate School of Political Science you must acquire your degree by completing a qualifying examination, a dissertation conceptual framework examination, a presentation before submitting a doctoral degree application dissertation, and a final oral examination, so the process for completing a doctoral dissertation is systematized. Therefore, while it takes some time to complete a doctoral dissertation, you can proceed with writing your dissertation deliberately while consulting with your supervisor. The literature and databases possessed by the university libraries are substantial, so I felt that my research proceeded smoothly.Financial supportDuring the first half of my studies, I applied for scholarships and research funds of Waseda University, as well as for a special researcher position (DC2) at JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) and I was hired, so I was able to cover living costs and the travel costs of field work. In addition, I was hired as an assistant in my department for the second half of my studies, so I was able to focus on writing my dissertation. During that time, I worked as the TA for Introduction to Political Analysis, a compulsory course in the department, so I had the opportunity to manage a small class set up in order to promote understanding of the lecture. I think that this teaching experience helped to boost my career.
