政治学コースに志願した理由 私は日本の安全保障に関する研究を行いたいと思い大学院への進学を決めましたが、同時に政治学を研究する上での基礎をさらに学ぶ必要性があるとも感じていました。早稲田大学の政治学研究科では方法論の講義が必修となっています。そのため、複数の分析手法を基礎から徹底的に学び、自らの研究を多面的に検討することが可能になると考え政治学研究科を志望しました。印象に残っている授業 特に印象に残っている授業の一つは「国際政治」です。この授業では毎回3〜10本程度の論文を読み、それぞれの論文の主張や分析手法といった関連性を読み取ることが求められました。課題量が多く大変でしたが、大学院での学びとは如何なるものかを知ることのできる大変有意義な授業でした。もう一つは「計量分析Ⅰ」です。新型コロナウイルスにより全てオンラインでの受講となりましたが、動画やDataCampというデータサイエンスの学習に特化した外部サイトなどを用いて経験的な分析手法を基礎から学ぶことができました。この授業で得られた知見は自身の研究を進める上で非常に役立ちました。自身の研究テーマについて 私の研究テーマは日本人の核兵器に対する態度を世論調査実験により検証するというものです。政治学における実験とは簡単に説明するとランダムに選択された被験者（人々）に対しシナリオなどの想定を与え、それが質問の回答にどのような影響を与えるかを測るものです。私はなぜ人々が戦争や反撃といった選択をするのかという意思決定の過程に興味がありました。そのため「唯一の被爆国」の国民として核兵器に対する拒否反応を持つ日本の人々がどのような想定、条件下であれば核兵器の使用を容認するのかということを明らかにしたいと考え上記のテーマを研究しました。修了後の進路について 外資系のコンサルティング企業から内定をいただいています。I Tやテクノロジーに強みを持つ企業のため、政治学研究科で学んだデータサイエンス分野での知見を活かすことができると考え上記の企業を志望しました。入社後はデータを用いて人々の働き方を改善するために尽力したいと考えています。20KITAMURA, (KOBAYASHI) NaokaM.A. in Political Science, Graduate School of Political Science(Completed in March 2021)Reason for Applying to the Graduate School of Political ScienceI decided to continue my studies at this graduate school because I wanted to conduct research on Japan’s security. At the same time, I felt that I needed to learn more about the foundations of the study of political science. Lectures on methodology are required courses at Waseda University’s Graduate School of Political Science. Therefore, I applied to the GSPS thinking that I could learn multiple analytical methods thoroughly and from the ground up, allowing me to consider my research from multiple perspectives.Classes that Left an ImpressionOne of the classes that particularly impressed me was “International Politics.” For every session of this class, we read around three to 10 papers and were expected to grasp how each paper related to the others in terms of its arguments and analytical methods. The amount of work required for the class was large and challenging, but it was a truly meaningful course that taught me what studying at the graduate level is. Another one was “Quantitative Analysis I.” Because of the novel coronavirus, this course ended up being conducted entirely online, but I was able to learn empirical methods of analysis from their foundations through videos and external websites, such as DataCamp, that tailored to the learning of data science. The knowledge that I gained through this class was extremely helpful to me as I pursued my research.About Your Research ThemeMy research theme was to investigate Japanese attitudes toward nuclear weapons through opinion poll-based experiments. Explaining in simple terms, experiments in the field of political science entail presenting randomly selected subjects (people) with scenarios and hypothetical situations and measuring how these influence their responses to questions. I was interested in why people select options such as going to war or counterattacking—in the process of decision-making. Thus, I conducted research on the theme that I chose because I wanted to clarify under what hypotheticals or conditions the people of Japan—the citizens of the one country that has suffered nuclear attacks and who tend to respond negatively toward nuclear weapons—would approve of the use of nuclear weapons.About Your Plans After Completing Your StudiesI have received a job offer from a foreign-owned consulting firm. Because this company’s strengths lie in IT and technology, I thought that I could put to use the knowledge in the field of data science that I learned at the Graduate School of Political Science at the company and decided to apply for a job with them.
