4problems have emerged as a new global point of contention. Geopolitical shifts are underway on a global scale. In Japan, which has achieved the long-standing goal of longevity society, questions about our society’s future are once again being raised as we see declining birthrates and the subsequent declining population trend. In the past few years, the global spread of COVID-19, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the subsequent surge in resource prices, and so forth are events that may be long remembered as historical turning points by future generations (or they may be forgotten). Looking back through history, it can be concluded that history is made up of people’s daily activities like thinking, decision-making, and acting on those decisions. Humans have often found themselves at turning points in history. With regard to this, Tanzan Ishibashi, an economist with a Waseda background who served as the chief writer of the Toyo Keizai Shinpo before and during the Second World War as well as Minister of Finance and Prime Minister after the war, published a series of editorials in the Toyo Keizai Shinpo, including one titled “An Industrial Revolution Centered on People,” in 1916, during the First World War. There, Tanzan argues that while the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century was centered on “things,” “the one in the coming 20th century must be centered on ‘people,’” and that only increasing the amount of products does not necessarily increase people’s happiness, as “the things must be distributed fairly according to the needs of each person” and “time to enjoy life is likewise a precious treasure for humankind.” Even today, more than a hundred years after Tanzan wrote this editorial, this point remains a challenge for humankind. I believe that economics is the study of such human activities. The educational goals of the Graduate School of Economics are to train researchers and create highly skilled professionals. As a graduate school open to the world, we accept diverse students regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or gender. We have faculty members who are active globally in their respective fields, and based on a fulfilling research and education program, it is possible to obtain a degree in either Japanese or English. In the case of the master’s program, Japanese-based program is provided in April enrollment and English-based program is provided in September enrollment. When considering the training of researchers, we have established a detailed research supervision system catered to the unique aspirations and abilities of each student. We are promoting the development of systematic coursework, and in addition to individual research guidance by responsible faculty members, we have implemented a system for supervision by faculty members in the relevant research field. Particularly in the doctoral program, students are encouraged to report their research in front of faculty and colleagues, including those in other fields, and to participate in interdisciplinary research projects that include the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. We also focus on counseling for research and life in general. Moreover, we are making investments in various measures to train world-class researchers, such as subsidies for presenting at academic conferences in Japan and abroad, and authoring papers. These efforts are steadily producing good outcomes as the number of students obtaining a doctoral degree has increased dramatically in the past few years. In the master’s program, we established the Empirical Analysis Program in 2014 that emphasizes acquiring practical knowledge of economics that can be used in the real world, with the aim of creating highly skilled professionals. We are putting our efforts into creating diverse professionals through the Global Political Economy Course, which enables close collaboration with the political field in conjunction with the graduate school, cooperation with foreign universities, and exchange programs. Students, who found employment after graduating from the graduate school’s master’s program, are active in a wide range of fields of society.I believe that it is our mission to look squarely at the potential of economics as an academic discipline that studies human activities, and to further enhance research and education as a global economic research hub located in Asia.MessageMasato SHIZUMEDean of the Graduate School of Economics“Spread your wings around the world ! ”We hear every day that the world today is at a historic turning point.
