Messages fromEDICSAcademic Advisors Professor Noriyuki Inoue, Ph.D.ProfessorQun Jin, Ph.D.ProfessorMasahiro Morioka, Ph.D.Associate Professor Theron Muller, Ph.D.Associate Professor Kazuki Sekine, Ph.D.Humanistic Educational Innovation in a Diverse WorldEducation is the key for actualizing and sustaining humanistic society, and the importance of studying educational innovation has never been higher. I specialize in educational psychology and action research methodology, and I welcome students with diverse backgrounds from all over the world. In the EDICS program, you will be guided to design and conduct your own research project as you critically examine key theoretical and methodological frameworks for your research. I look forward to working with you in this intellectual endeavor.Understanding and Supporting Humans with AI and Big DataAdvancements in technology have accelerated digitalization, enabling the accumulation of vast amounts of data from across the world. Such big data has the potential to significantly transform our lives and enrich society. Our work focuses on exploring human-related insights from big data and understanding the multifaceted aspects of human nature through an integrated, AI-driven approach to data analysis. By harnessing these insights, we aim to develop smart services that provide high-quality, personalized healthcare and learning support tailored to the unique needs of each individual.Bioethics and Philosophy of LifeThe philosophy of the meaning of life is an emerging area in the research of humanities. I will encourage graduate students to study not only an analytical approach to the topic, but also educational, phenomenological, and cross-cultural approaches. I have studied philosophical issues related to this topic from the perspective of an affirmation-based approach and a critique of contemporary civilization (painless civilization), so students can broaden their scope through our philosophical discussions.Language and SocietyMy students and I explore how language and society interconnect, such as by investigating shifts in academic publishing from Japanese to English and how textbooks reflect ethnic diversity. We also investigate language learning needs and how tools like generative AI and automated writing evaluation can address them. Join us to develop critical, reflexive research skills for the next stage of your education and career!Communication is EverythingIn our lab, we explore communication in which messages are conveyed through multiple modalities, including speech, facial expressions, eye gaze, and gestures. Focusing on the relationship between gestures and speech, we examine the processes and mechanisms of communication that involve language, spatial cognition, and cultural contexts. The program provides comprehensive learning opportunities in communication, fostering personal growth and career development within the rich academic environment of Waseda University’s Graduate School of Human Sciences.EDICS Educational Innovation and Communication Studies
